About SCONLI - 14

The Students’ Conference of Linguistics in India (SCONLI) is a two-day international conference organized annually by research scholars of linguistics in India. It started in 2006 with its first meet at CIEFL, Hyderabad (now EFL University), followed by Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Since then it has been hosted by different universities and institutes. The conference has completed 13 successful years. The SCONLI 13 was hosted by IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in 2019. SCONLI has proved to be quite beneficial over the years for the students of linguistics. It is different from the other conferences as it is managed thoroughly by the students and the research scholars, which gives them the opportunity to learn diverse aspects of the academic world. It has served as a scholarly platform for young linguists to engage in diverse activities ranging from writing to reviewing papers to chairing the conference sessions and inviting experts of their choice for the talks.

SCONLI is not confined to core linguistics like many other conferences of linguistics. The field of linguistics is highly multidisciplinary and that is well represented in SCONLI, where we see quality research papers from different sub disciplines of linguistics like forensic linguistics, computational linguistics, anthropological linguistics, language documentation, media linguistics, etc. SCONLI also has a tradition of publishing the selected papers in its proceedings or as book chapters. Some of the linguists who are working today as faculties in different reputed universities or institutes, had their first published papers in the SCONLI proceedings.

How to Reach

Kharagpur - a dusty town tucked away in the eastern corner of India, famous until 1950 as home to the longest railway platform in the world - became the nursery where the seed of the IIT system was planted in 1951. IIT Kharagpur started its journey in the old Hijli Detention Camp in Eastern India, where some ofthe country's great freedom fighters toiled and sacrificed their lives for India's independence. Kharagpur is known world over for two landmarks. One, the longest railway platform, and the other, the Indian Institute of Technology, more commonly known as IIT. Situated about 120 km west of Kolkata, Kharagpur is well connected to Kolkata by Road and Rail transport. Kharagpur can be reached in about 2 hours by train or 3 hours by car from Howrah railway station of Kolkata. Kharagpur is also connected by direct train services to most major cities of the country. The Institute is about 10 minutes drive (5 km) from the Kharagpur railway station. Private taxi, autorickshaw or cycle-rickshaw can be hired to reach the Institute.

By Air

The nearest airport to Kharagpur is the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), Kolkata. You can get a flight to Kolkata airport on regular basis. It is widely connected to almost all the major destinations of the country. From Kolkata Airport you can take a cab from the Airport taxi stand to Kharagpur. The distance is almost 140KM. The travel time is approximately 2.30 hrs. It costs roughly Rs. 4000/- (depending on the taxi type).

You can take a cab and reach Howrah railway station. Take a taxi to Howrah Station (UBER and OLA is available). The cost is approximately Rs. 300. It takes around 1.30 Hrs (if you get Traffic Jam) to reach Howrah station. There is regular Express and Local (choice is yours) trains to Kharagpur. It takes 2 hrs by an express train - Fare - Rs 60/- to 150/- depending on class and train type. The Institute is 5 km from Kharagpur railway station. (Kharagpur Rly stn.-IIT campus: Taxi fare Rs. 200 /-, Rickshaw Fare Rs. 60/-, Auto rickshaw Fare Rs.100/-)

By train
Kharagpur is well connected to most major cities of India by rail. There are frequent trains to Kharagpur. Check http://www.indianrail.gov.in/ for train details. Alternatively, you can reach the Howrah Railway station and take a local or express train to Kharagpur.

You can also check trains bound towards Hijli station, which is very close to the IIT Kharagpur campus. There are direct trains from Delhi, Patna and other cities to Hijli.
